Dear Pinterest, Thank you for changing your terms!

HUGE SIGH OF RELIEF!

I wrote about Pinterest’s somewhat sketchy Terms and Conditions last week, and I was quite concerned that I would have to leave them. However, they announced today that they actually listened to us, and they’re changing them!

I’m thrilled, I really am. Bravo, Pinterest, for doing the right thing.

Dear Pinterest, Change your terms or I’m leaving.

Sunday, March 11th, 2012

I’m a pretty prolific user of Pinterest. It’s been a huge source of inspiration for me. I have 277 followers, 45 boards and 3470 pins.

But I’m really considering deleting them all.

Let’s be honest – no one really reads the terms and conditions of anything, and maybe this is teaching me a lesson. But in the depths of Pinterest’s fine print, we learn that by pinning, you give Pinterest the right to do ANYTHING with the photo (including sell it), but YOU maintain liability. In short, if someone sues Pinterest for selling a photo that you pinned… you’re liable and Pinterest isn’t.

When I pin someone’s work, I do it because I’m inspired. I don’t want to take credit for it, and I don’t want to steal it. But I am not going down for copyright infringement that Pinterest endorses, no matter how valuable it’s been to me.
