PSA: Check your smoke alarms!

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

One of my little sisters, Vanessa, moved into her first real place just a few months ago. Unfortunately, on Sunday night, their house burned down.

From what I understand, the breaker had gone off but she couldn’t get it to stay reset. She said it smelled funny and “electrical”, and feeling rather silly and paranoid, she grabbed her kitten and laptop and took them out to her car.
When she came inside, she could smell smoke. Still feeling silly, she called 911. As she was on the phone with the dispatcher, the ceiling burst into flames.

Luckily, everyone survived (including the kitten!) but the house was a total loss.

Here’s why she deserves the Sister Of The Year Award: in the midst of the chaos, she asked a firefighter to go in the house and save my ukulele- one I borrowed her at Christmas until she could save up for her own.

I highly doubt I would have had the foresight to do such a thing. I’m a little stunned and somehow it makes me feel worse. Obviously the ukulele isn’t the important thing here, but the fact that my (very selfless) sister and her roommates are all okay.

The morals of the story are these:
-Make sure you test your smoke alarms frequently and replace the batteries regularly!
- Trust your instincts! It’s better to feel silly and paranoid than to lose your cat (or worse) in a fire!

Home-iversary

Friday, August 19th, 2011

We’ll have lived in our house for a whole year (I can’t believe it) at the end of this month. Not gonna lie, I’ve done far less with it than I wanted.

So, I jumped on Pinterest (obviously) and poured over my “For The Home” board and picked out photos that I wanted to specifically design my space around. I stuck them all in a brand new board.  Let me show you some of my favorites!

First of all, this tile is amazing. If we ever save up enough money to redo the bathroom, I want this in it.

Do you ever think my craft room could be so organized? Probably not. A girl can dream.

This bedroom is a little too rustic for the style of my house, but I love the colors.

I like the bed in this photo.

I am *definitely* doing this on my fridge!

I lurrrrve these walls.

Any suggestions? My house is 100 years old this year! Kind of a bungalow style, and only 900 sq. ft. Ahhh!! So little space!

***I own none of these photos, but they are all linked to their respective owners on this pin board***

String of Lights

Monday, November 8th, 2010

After we moved into our  house, the first project I made were lanterns for my porch.  Actually, the original intention was to string them up on our patio when we had outdoor dinner parties.  Realistically, by the time we were unpacked enough to even consider a dinner party, it was like twenty degrees.  So they are on my porch.

This was a SUPER simple project.  Time consuming, yes, but also very simple.

Forgive me, most of the photos are pretty blah, and I didn’t take nearly enough at the time.  I only had my phone camera, and I didn’t know if I wanted to make a tutorial or not.  Now I know better.

Supplies needed:

  • 8″x8″ Scrapbook paper pad – I used this one.
  • That green floral wire stuff (actually any thin wire works, but this was by far the cheapest)
  • Scotch tape
  • Mini hole puncher
  • Pliers (I just used my jewelery pliers)
  • Scissors
  • String of Christmas lights

First, assemble the shades.  This took forever.

Using the scissors, cut the 8″x8″ sheets info four 2″x8″ strips.  I used a scissors cause I didn’t think it was necessary to be super precise.

Fold each strip in half, and then fold each side in towards the center fold to make a cube… does that make sense?  I wish I had taken a picture.  Then, take a piece of scotch tape and fold it around the corner to close it.

Use your hole puncher to punch two holes at the top of the shade near the top, on opposite sides.

Make, oh, a hundred or so.  One for each light.

Cut a length 3″ish length of wire.  Fold it in half and wrap around the base of one of the lights, like the above picture.

At this point, slip each end of the wire into each hole on the shade.  Fold the ends up, towards the light.  Snip the excess off.

Again, do this about a hundred times.  Try not to get it too tangled.

Hang them!  Obviously, this picture was taken when things were still green.

And finally, some hipstamatic shots taken outside.

I hope you found this to be useful!  If you make them, can you show me??  I wanna see!

Help me decorate my living room!

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

I am in a dilemma. Matt and I have rearranged our living room for about the 10000th time. And we’re in the process of building a new entertainment center. But it is the one room that I feel isn’t ever the way I want it.

Two walls are a dark teal, the other two are white, and we have a brown sofa. Those pretty much have to stay the way they are.

To give you an idea of what my style is, have a look at my bedroom:

My dresser! I found that mirror at Saver’s and spray-painted it green to compliment my green walls. The orchid was a gift from my secret sister at church :-) . It’s the only plant I’ve been successful at keeping alive. There are a few of my vintage teacups, and my jewelery.  An old fashioned alarm clock from Ikea, and some vintage hankies.  I want to replace that lamp, though!

This is a closeup of the picture that our friend Dave took with his antique camera. It’s probably my favorite picture of us.

This is an old picture of my grandma and her sister, Joann. Grandma is on the left. I love the cute hair and dresses.

I like that Patches is in the mirror. Here you can see my bed (plain white comforter) and my pink curtains. I’m not usually a pink-y type of person, but I like that it all looks kind of vintagey. I’m working on a quilt right now that is shades of green and pink for my bed.

Okay- I’d like to do something similar with the living room. On my list of to-dos, I want to make some throw pillows, a quilt, and re-upholster a couple chairs for reading.

Any other ideas?
